Air fried Navratri Kuttu (Buck Wheat) flour Puri

Fasting season or feasting season….Navratri to some extent is both. Nav (nine) Ratri (nights) is a Hindu festival celebrated across India, twice a year. Many folks observe fasts during this period and what they can eat or drink varies in different households, as cultures have evolved over a period of time. This is where the fast often turns into feast with variety of approved foods that can be consumed during fasting.

As long as I can remember, right from my childhood, everyone in my family observed Navratri fasts too and I have continued to do so.

With the lifestyle struggles and need to lose weight, we all are trying something or the other to stick to healthy foods and when the Navratri season strikes, with the fried puri’s and pakori’s (fritters), months of effort to eat healthy, slip away in vain. That was my dilemma  earlier today…so I thought why not give the Navratri deep fried food an air fryer version! Turned out pretty good, so here I am sharing the recipe with you. Hope you enjoy!

A healthy air-fried version of Navratri must have deep fried Kuttu (buck wheat) flour Puri’s.

Ingredients

  1. Kuttu / Buck wheat- 1 cup (I buy it here)
  2. Boiled Potatoes 3 Medium (I’ve used 6 very small potatoes)
  3. Salt to taste (Sendha / rock salt for those who observe fasts in Navratri) (I buy it here)
  4. Crushed black pepper (optional)
  5. Ghee or oil spray for light greasing

Directions

Step 1:

Peel boiled potatoes and keep in a bowl

Step 2:

Adding buck wheat / Kuttu flour, salt and black pepper to the bowl with potatoes

Step 3:

Knead the flour by mashing potatoes into the flour. I usually don’t need to add water, but if you feel the need you can.

Kuttu

Step 4:

Preheat the Air-fryer at 350F. I use the Black Decker Air-fryer. Get it here.

Step 5:

Take golf size balls of the dough and using slight water in your palms press to make small round Puri’s. Apply very little ghee or oil spray on both sides of the Puri’s and place them gently in the air fryer.

Step 6:

Air fry for 12-15 minutes turning at least once or till they are brown and slightly crisp on top.

Be carefully while turning. Use a spatula to turn as the Puri’s will be soft and may break.

Step 7:

Serve hot with plain yoghurt or cucumber raita and enjoy the healthy feast while fasting.
